Making Room for Growing Boys

Kitchen Layout and Reconstruction

For the kitchen renovation, the homeowner wanted a more comfortable space for everyone – allowiing room for the growing number of cooks in the family. The original great room/kitchen, while functional, was created by enclosing an old deck – which made it poorly constructed and drafty. We created a brighter open space by allowing more natural light into the working area. With the reconstruction, the new space has the feeling of having always been this way – but with a fresh updated look.

To make more efficient use of space, we eliminated the cut out between the kitchen and great room  to allow more natural light. This also created more counter space for counter eating and workspace. We reconfigured the cabinetry for better storage space and added a new pantry. Instead of tripping over the dog’s dishes, the family dog has a new eating drinking spot with matching countertop at the end of the main counter. The white cabinets and light counters make the small galley feel much bigger. Another small change that created a greater sense of space was the removal of the pocket door to dining area.

Energy Efficient Upgrades

To increase energy efficiency all walls that were opened up, were re-insulated. Additional insulation was added below the kitchen/great room connection for increased comfort. A new header was installed to bring the structural connection up to code. All pot lights and lighting fixtures were upgraded to LED lighting with dimmers. Low flow plumbing fixtures were added and all appliances are now Energuide certified.

A Basement with a Purpose

With twin boys involved in hockey, the basement was refinished to include a great room to dry out all the sports equipment. A games room with built in fireplace, entertainment unit and foosball table will give them their space for years to come.
